If you're a fan of Bridgerton, you might be even more so now that Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and others are adding to the series' music lineup.
Netflix confirms that orchestral covers in Bridgerton Season 3 will include many familiar songs, plus an original song, All I Want, in the second batch of episodes. The series is known for its instrumental covers, and this season will surely not disappoint.
The new season will focus on Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton's (Luke Newton) transformation from friends to lovers. So, having some appropriate, well-known tunes will help bridge (no pun intended) the gap between the visual and musical elements.
Music featured in Bridgerton Season 3
To kick things off, in Episode 1, abcdefu (Gayle) by Vitula will be a staple song. Music supervisor Justin Kamps said of the tune, “What a way to kick off the covers for the season. I think Gayle herself is such a badass. And if you've ever seen Gayle perform when that song comes on, everyone is shouting it, and it's a big energy.”
Episode 2 will have Dynamite (BTW) by Vitamin String Quartet and Jealous (Nick Jonas) by Shimmer.
As for what's next, Episode 3 will feature Cheap Thrills (Sia) and Happier Than Ever (Billie Eilish), both by Vitamin String Quartet. Meanwhile, Episode 4 has Snow on the Beach (Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey) by Atwood Quartet and Give Me Everything (Pitbull) by Archer March.
The new song, All I Want, was written by nine-time Grammy nominee Rogét Chahayed, Wesley Singerman, Taylor Dexter, and Nicole Cohen.
Regarding the songs, it's all about the mood and scenes.
“It's a much more lighthearted feeling, I think, overall,” composer Kris Bowers said. “There's obviously the ups and downs that we always have in this show. But with Colin and Pen being friends, with a lot of their interactions having a bit of awkwardness to them — and within this season, there are so many stories that we dip into — there's a lot of fun and lightness that we experience with the music and comedic moments.”
Bowers added, “I remember writing their theme only having read the first handful of episodes. And I told myself, ‘There's no way this won't have a moment of tragedy at some point.' So the theme I wrote in its first iteration carried that potential tragedy to it. But each time it's used, it's reacting to whatever scene it's being used in. So, it becomes malleable, and it feels positive. It feels uplifting or emotional in different ways.”
“My thinking behind Colin and Pen was how much of it was this timidity and this two-steps-forward, one-step-back kind of thing,” the composer added. “The theme that I wrote melodically has this shape to it that's meant to evoke this feeling.”
Kamps said, “Sometimes initially it's about what matches the choreography, and then later it's about what matches the scene and the emotion. We have a lot of covers that aren't necessarily part of ball sequences this year, and it's because we found some cute places to insert something that can play as a fun cover [but] doesn't necessarily have to be attached to a dance sequence.”
Bridgerton Season 3 Part One premieres May 16, and Part Two on June 13.
