The 2022 NFL Draft is over but teams across the league are still finalizing their rosters. Many players will either be cut or signed in the coming weeks. The Atlanta Falcons made a decision on Monday, releasing a veteran player from the team. It's not a shocking move at all, as Atlanta likely made the right choice.

According to Jordan Schultz, the Falcons are releasing running back Mike Davis. After having a stellar year with the Carolina Panthers in the 2020 season, Atlanta brought in the veteran to help boost the run game. Instead, Davis was routinely outplayed by Cordarrelle Patterson and the other running backs on the roster.

Atlanta will be saving $2.5 million, which opens up a small amount of cap space for the front office. That money will likely be allocated towards a rookie the franchise recently selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Falcons don't have a great running back situation, but Patterson will likely be the main option out of the backfield in the upcoming season.

Additionally, the Falcons selected Tyler Allgeier in the fifth round. It's not likely that a rookie running back taken that like will make a huge impact in the run game. However, he'll have an opportunity to win the main backup role behind Cordarrelle Patterson.

Keep an eye on the Falcons for the remainder of the offseason. The roster isn't in great shape right now but we could see some veterans signed in the coming weeks. It'll be an interesting season for this franchise, as the front office is still constructing the foundation for the rebuild. With Mike Davis gone, Atlanta can allow a late-round flier like Allgeier to have a real opportunity.
