Atlanta Falcons running back Todd Gurley, who signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract after being released by the Los Angeles Rams, will be wearing the No. 21. That jersey number is the same number Deion Sanders wore for the Falcons during the first five seasons of his Hall of Fame career.

During a radio interview on Friday, Gurley expressed that Sanders was hating on him for choosing that number with the Falcons. However, Sanders claims he was joking with Gurley and is “proud that he will represent it right.”

Thank u for your love but it ain't that deep to me. I was joking with @TG3II I love that youngsta and proud that he will represent it right. I love these kids that play today and wish them all well. “A NUMBER DIDN'T MAKE PRIME, PRIME MADE THE NUMBER”

Gurley wore No. 3 during his college days at the University of Georgia and the No. 30 during his phenomenal five-year stint with the Rams. However, he wanted to change things up when he signed the Falcons this free agency. Since The Falcons' organization does not retire numbers, Gurley was allowed to choose the No. 21. In addition, Gurley had to choose a number from 20 to 49, according to the NFL rules.

Nevertheless, other players have worn the No. 21 since Sanders left the Falcons after the 1993 season. So it's uncertain why Sanders reached out to Gurley after he chose that number. Cornerback Desmond Trufant wore the No. 21 for the Falcons the past seven seasons but was cut by the Falcons.
