The 2018 regular season is inching closer just a couple of weeks away from getting under with only two more preseason games left on the docket.

With that in mind, Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn has voiced that he plans to sit both Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones and Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman for those final two contests, according to Will McFadden of AtlantaFalcons.com.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said it was “likely” that Jones and Freeman won't see the field in a preseason game this year.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise given that these two players are huge pieces of the puzzle offensively. There is also the fact that each has had their fair share of injuries over the last couple of seasons.

Freeman has a history with concussions as he has suffered three since November 2015 as well as suffering a right knee injury near the tail end of the 2017 season. The Falcons want to preserve his health as much as possible as he is proven to be a huge factor out of the backfield as both a runner and receiver. He is coming off another productive campaign with 865 rushing yards with seven touchdowns along with 36 catches for 317 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Jones has battled through numerous nagging injuries over the last few years but has been able to continue to perform at an elite level. He is coming off another impressive season where he posted 88 catches for 1,444 receiving yards and three touchdowns, which marked the fourth straight year with at least 80 catches and 1,400 receiving yards. What should also be noted is that he missed a sizeable chunk of the offseason due to his holdout to get a slight bump up in his salary for this upcoming season.

The decision to not play either of these two players in the rest of the preseason should ensure that both will be on the field come Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
