With a strong FP2 performance, Max Verstappen and Christian Horner seem confident that Red Bull can make waves in this weekend's Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix.

After performing better than rival Lewis Hamilton in FP2, Verstappen feels good about what he can achieve this weekend—looking to extend his slim lead in the driver standings.

“It was quite a good day,” reckoned two-time Mexico winner Verstappen. “Of course, we’re always trying to improve the car, trying to make it feel better. Of course also in FP1, the track was very dirty, so in FP2 that was already a bit nicer. The car’s working quite well. A few things… to look at but pretty good.

“We have a good feeling but tomorrow we need to be there as well,” he added. “We need to look into a lot of things, but it was a positive start to the weekend.”

However, Horner recognizes the capability of a team like Mercedes but seems optimistic about how Red Bull's drivers and their cars have progressed in this weekend's practice session.

“That was a solid session for us I think,” Horner told Sky Sports F1 after FP2. “Both drivers have started to find a set-up they’re liking and both the short runs and long runs are looking reasonable. I think Mercedes have still got a bit in the pocket, so I don’t think we’ve seen their full potential yet, but focusing on ourselves, it was a reasonable day,” the Formula 1 boss said.

“The engine’s working well at this altitude,” added Horner, after all four Honda-powered cars ended FP2 in the top 10. “It’s a track that has suited our car over the last few years. We’ve found a reasonable balance today, but we’ve seen all year that there’s been less than a tenth between the cars and we’re expecting that to be the same tomorrow.”

With just five races to go, Verstappen can be cautious with his slim 12-point advantage, as a seven-time Formula 1 world champion is just right behind his tail.
