George Miller's Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth-led Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is here, but how does it end and what does it mean?

In the film, the title character embarks on a journey of vengeance. But does she ultimately get it?

What's it about?

Furiosa follows the title character, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, after she is abducted by Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and the Biker Horde. The group is also responsible for killing her mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser).

They take her and Dementus takes Furiosa under his wing. However, it isn't meant to last. During a negotiation with the Citadel, Dementus is forced to give Furiosa to them.

After Furiosa is handed over to the Citadel, she escapes their imprisoned women and poses as a man until her adult years. Eventually, she encounters an older Dementus and is determined to make him pay.

Furiosa's ending

On Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke) and Furiosa's mission, they attempt to sabotage the Biker Horde. They narrowly escape their clutches before eventually being caught in the deserts of the Wasteland.

It's there that Dementus, who has yet to recognize Furiosa, tortures Jack to death. They run him in circles as the Biker Horde's dogs chase him.

Furiosa has one arm chained to Dementus' vehicle. During the hours of torture, she cuts off her arm and escapes thanks to the dust that has built up.

The Biker Horde catches on, though, and they chase her through the Wasteland. She eventually makes it back to the Citadel and warms them of the Biker Horde's plan — they assume the Citadel army will go to the Gas Town. So, the Citadel military fakes them out and a war ensues.

“If you find him, he's mine,” Furiosa tells Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) about Dementus.

In the coming days, Furiosa makes herself a metal arm. She makes her way to the battle to find Dementus.

A villain's demise

After a lengthy chase, Furiosa tracks Dementus down. He wakes up in a tent thinking he is safe. He quickly realizes that his water has been taken and his guns unloaded.

Furiosa then follows him in his car as he tries to run. Dementus eventually surrenders before Furiosa begins beating him down. He doesn't realize who she is until she picks up the teddy bear he proudly wears.

“Do you have it in you to make it epic?” Dementus asks her in reference to his forthcoming doom (she promptly takes away his voice after this).

Like any folklore, Dementus' fate has several interpretations. The film ends with narration that goes through some of the theories. One includes Furiosa dragging Dementus through the desert like he did to Jack, another is that she shot him in the head.

But the reality is that Furiosa uses him as the base of a tree in the Citadel. Fruit blossoms from the tree as Dementus withers away. The film ends the same way it began — with the title character picking fruit from a tree.

She also begins rescuing the women who are being groomed to be wives in the Citadel. That leads her to where audiences meet the character in Fury Road.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be released on May 24.
