LEC Spring 2022 Week 1
The League of Legends European Championship, or LEC, kicked off its first week of the season with a Superweek. This meant 3 days of games over the weekend, and a great chance for the new LEC rosters to debut. The LEC Spring 2022 Week 1 introduced fans to the new players, along with those returning. To sum up this week, it was quite an underwhelming performance from Team Vitality's superstar lineup as they end the week 0-3. Still, teams like Rogue and Fnatic performed as expected and sit on top of the standings. It felt like most of the teams are still struggling to find their identity after huge roster changes.
Champions like Jinx, Xin Zhao, Thresh, and Viego saw high priority this week. Teams mostly played around Jinx's hyper carry nature and funneled as much resources as possible into her. A highlight play from this week was Martin “Wunder” Nordahl's outplay on his Gragas.
Full VODs and schedules are available here. For the other weeks, check out the LEC Spring 2022 article.
Week 1 Day 1
MAD Lions vs Team Vitality
- Picks: [MAD] Renekton, Diana, Yasuo, Karthus, Nautilus vs [VIT] Kennen, Viego, Akshan, Jhin, Alistar
- Bans: [MAD] LeBlanc, Jinx, Caitlyn, Sett, Vex. [VIT] Twisted Fate, Lee Sin, Thresh, Leona, Rakan
- Result: MAD win in 32:01 (Kills: MAD 20 – 9 VIT)
- TL;DW: Luka “Perkz” Perkovic was warmly welcomed back to the LEC by constant ganks from the MAD squad. MAD built an early lead through roams from jungle and support. MAD snowballed the lead through fighting any opportunity they had. VIT quickly lost map control, and MAD took over. The Diana-Yasuo combo was well utilized all throughout the game.
Rogue vs SK Gaming
- Picks: [RGE] Ornn, Xin Zhao, LeBlanc, Jinx, Rakan vs [SK] Gwen, Jarvan IV, Vex, Jhin, Nautilus
- Bans: [RGE] Kalista, Lucian, Lee Sin, Jayce, Camille. [SK] Twisted Fate, Caitlyn, Thresh, Lulu, Renekton
- Result: RGE win in 27:30 (Kills: RGE 15 – 8 SK)
- TL;DW: Rogue funneled gold into Jinx in the early game. Their team fight centric draft showed its strength in the midgame. SK, on the other hand, continued to fight but was unable to touch Jinx. The early game investment on Jinx proved its worth as she singlehandedly won fights. Rogue's team composition eventually scaled to a point where they became too strong for SK to do anything.
EXCEL Esports vs G2 Esports
- Picks: [XL] Gangplank, Jarvan IV, Malzahar, Lucian, Nami vs [G2] Corki, Xin Zhao, LeBlanc, Jinx, Lulu
- Bans: [XL] Jayce, Akshan, Jhin, Thresh, Gwen. [G2] Twisted Fate, Lee Sin, Caitlyn, Lissandra, Renekton
- Result: G2 win in 41:47 (Kills: XL 17 – 27 G2)
- TL;DW: G2 was quick to punish XL's early aggression. Jinx is once again given all the resources on the map. Gold was almost even at 15 minutes, with only a 1k gold lead on G2. Xin Zhao's Crescent Guard and Corki's package made fights difficult for XL. XL cracks G2's base after slaying Baron Nashor. G2, in the meantime, claim their Ocean Soul. G2 slay Baron but was unable to convert it into towers. They then claim the Elder Dragon buff and wipe XL. Overall a close game but Jinx proved too much to handle for XL.
Astralis vs Misfits Gaming
- Picks: [AST] Kennen, Viego, Vex, Jinx, Thresh vs [MSF] Irelia, Diana, Yasuo, Jhin, Nautilus
- Bans: [AST] LeBlanc, Lee Sin, Caitlyn, Jayce, Leona. [MSF] Twisted Fate, Trundle, Renekton, Sett, Sylas
- Result: MSF win in 40:57 (Kills: AST 13 – 14 MSF)
- TL;DW: Early game was slow. First blood was claimed by AST 12 minutes in, which they then convert into a dragon. The first 20 minutes had no team fights, only small skirmishes around the map. The Astralis team composition showed its strength in picking off MSF members. MSF answers with the Diana-Yasuo combo. MSF secure Baron Nashor and take down several of AST's towers. AST turns it with a flank from Kennen and stops the Baron siege. MSF had a negligible 4k gold lead at 40 minutes. They finally close out the game after winning a team fight in AST's base.
Fnatic vs Team BDS
- Picks: [FNC] Gwen, Xin Zhao, Twisted Fate, Jhin, Rakan vs [BDS] Darius, Viego, LeBlanc, Lucian, Nami
- Bans: [FNC] Renekton, Diana, Caitlyn, Orianna, Sylas. [BDS] Thresh Lee Sin, Jinx, Pyke, Nautilus
- Result: FNC win in 34:40 (Kills: FNC 15 – 12 BDS)
- TL;DW: BDS pull ahead in kills early due to a phenomenal performance from Viego. Twisted Fate answers using Destiny to find picks across the map. Rakan's engage wins a team fight and allows FNC to secure the Baron. They crack open the BDS base and claim a dragon. BDS catches FNC inside their jungle and claim Baron for themselves. Rakan once again wins a fight and repels the Baron push. FNC go for the victory push and close out this even game.
Week 1 Day 2
Rogue vs Misfits Gaming
- Picks: [RGE] Renekton, Jarvan IV, Viktor, Jinx, Lulu vs [MSF] Gnar, Xin Zhao, LeBlanc, Jhin, Yuumi
- Bans: [RGE] Diana, Jayce, Lee Sin, Gwen, Camille. [MSF] Twisted Fate, Caitlyn, Thresh, Ornn, Nautilus
- Result: RGE win in 34:05 (Kills: RGE 16 – 8 MSF)
- TL;DW: MSF applied constant pressure to mid early. Rogue, however, answer in the side lanes. Rogue managed to steal what would have been Misfits' third dragon, and win the subsequent fight. Off of this, they also claim Baron. Jinx took over the midgame fights. MSF find a window to secure Baron for themselves, but lost the fight and the game.
EXCEL Gaming vs Team BDS
- Picks: [XL] Ornn, Jarvan IV, Corki, Jinx, Lulu vs [BDS] Irelia, Xin Zhao, Syndra, Jhin, Soraka
- Bans: [XL] Renekton, Diana, Thresh, Sett, Yuumi. [BDS] Lee Sin, Twisted Fate, Caitlyn, Gangplank, Gwen
- Result: BDS win in 37:22 (Kills: XL 9 – 13 BDS)
- TL;DW: Great roams from the XL squad allowed their lanes to gain the advantage. Meanwhile, BDS stacked a couple of dragons. XL soon had enough map control to claim the next two. The team fight presence from Ornn, Corki, and Jinx was too much for BDS to handle in the midgame. BDS soon snatch the victory after they claim Baron Nashor off of a pick on XL's jungler.
SK Gaming vs MAD Lions
- Picks: [SK] Gragas, Xin Zhao, Corki, Ezreal, Alistar vs [MAD] Gwen, Diana, Yasuo, Jhin, Nautilus
- Bans: [SK] Thresh, Twisted Fate, Renekton, Rakan, Jayce. [MAD] Caitlyn, LeBlanc, Vex, Yuumi, Braum
- Result: SK win in 54:50 (Kills: SK 29 – 24 MAD)
- TL;DW: SK's disengage comp worked nicely against MAD's close range composition. They quickly stack dragons and claim the Chemtech Soul. The Dragon Soul combined with SK's consistent damage made it impossible for MAD to fight. MAD somehow claim the Elder Dragon, and Baron soon after. They were unable to convert this into a win, and another fight breaks out around Elder Dragon #2. SK reign supreme in the fight and claim the Elder buff. MAD repel the push, and Elder Dragon #3 spawns. A five man ultimate from the Diana-Yasuo combo wins MAD the fight. Somehow this and the Baron does not convert into a win. SK catch all members of the MAD squad and the hour long bloodbath comes to a close.
G2 Esports vs Astralis
- Picks: [G2] Graves, Lee Sin, Syndra, Seraphine, Pyke vs [AST] Kennen, Trundle, Irelia, Aphelios, Thresh
- Bans: [G2] Jinx, Diana, Caitlyn, Poppy, Xin Zhao. [AST] Twisted Fate, LeBlanc, Akshan, Lucian, Jhin
- Result: G2 win in 34:33 (Kills: G2 14 – 13 AST)
- TL;DW: G2 pull ahead early from good roams by Pyke. Trundle tries to pull AST from the dregs but G2's unconventional bot duo goes online in fights. A slow game overall with G2 slowly taking over the game with their team fighting.
Team Vitality vs Fnatic
- Picks: [VIT] Renekton, Qiyana, Twisted Fate, Jinx, Rakan vs [FNC] Gragas, Viego, LeBlanc, Jhin, Zilean
- Bans: [VIT] Thresh, Lee Sin, Ryzze, Leona, Gwen. [FNC] Diana, Jayce, Lucian, Kaisa, Ezreal
- Result: FNC win in 33:36 (Kills: VIT 12 – 16 FNC)
- TL;DW: A highlight play from FNC top laner Martin “Wunder” Hansen outplays a three-man dive attempt with clean movement. Things looked pretty even for the most part until Vitality continuously picked off members of FNC and claim some objectives. FNC mount a comeback as their solo lanes grow stronger. A great performance from Vitality but they could not win against Fnatic's Ocean Soul.
Week 1 Day 3
Team BDS vs Misfits Gaming
- Picks: [BDS] Sion, Xin Zhao, Syndra, Ezreal, Yuumi vs [MSF] Jayce, Jarvan IV, Sylas, Aphelios, Thresh
- Bans: [BDS] LeBlanc, Lee Sin, Diana, Akali, Gragas. [MSF] Twisted Fate, Renekton, Caitlyn, Irelia, Corki
- Result: MSF win in 29:50 (Kills: BDS 9 – 15 MSF)
- TL;DW: Sion promptly shut down Jayce in lane. Despite this, MSF got more objectives from their other strong early lanes. Sion, however, continue to stack armor against MSF's AD-centric team. MSF herded BDS and ace them. This resulted in a Baron, and they slowly grow their lead. BDS was not allowed to leave their base and MSF eventually went for the end.
EXCEL Esports vs Team Vitality
- Picks: [XL] Jayce, Xin Zhao, LeBlanc, Xayah, Rakan vs [VIT] Wukong, Viego, Vex, Jinx, Thresh
- Bans: [XL] Diana, Yuumi, Renekton, Malphite, Gangplank. [VIT] Twisted Fate, Lee Sin, Caitlyn, Jhin, Corki
- Result: XL win in 37:42 (Kills: XL 13 – 8 VIT)
- TL;DW: Both squads played slow in the early game. At 15 minutes, the game was even in kills, towers, and objectives. This might be the case, but the game state tipped in VIT's favor. They become too aggressive and XL was quick to punish. XL use their poke and take the opportunity to claim the Infernal Soul. VIT soon decide to secure the Elder Dragon but they failed to stop the backdoor attempt. This meant that VIT's superstar lineup of players started the week without a win.
Rogue vs Astralis
- Picks: [RGE] Jayce, Trundle, Viktor, Jinx, Rakan vs [AST] Renekton, Viego, Akali, Jhin, Leona
- Bans: [RGE] Corki, Lucian, Vex, Jarvan IV, Malphite. Twisted Fate, LeBlanc, Caitlyn, Thresh, Lee Sin
- Result: XL win in 37:42 (Kills: XL 13 – 8 VIT)
- TL;DW: RGE demonstrated an objective focused and controlled gameplay. For them, this meant moving Jinx around to take down towers. Rogue's “Arcane-inspired” composition pushed for the win swiftly. Astralis get stomped and Rogue finish LEC Spring 2022 Week 1 undefeated.
SK Gaming vs Fnatic
- Picks: [SK] Gragas, Xin Zhao, Zoe, Ezreal, Rakan vs [FNC] Gangplank, Lee Sin, Viktor, Aphelios, Thresh
- Bans: [SK] Twisted Fate, LeBlanc, Caitlyn, Ryze, Gwen. [FNC] Diana, Corki, Jarvan IV, Jhin, Kalista
- Result: FNC win in 33:27 (Kills: SK 8 – 13 FNC)
- TL;DW: The top side of the map was action-packed. SK, however, respond well to FNC's aggression and catch them off guard several times. FNC tip the scales by winning a huge fight and claiming Baron. They soon join Rogue at the top of the standings at 3-0 in the LEC Spring 2022 Week 1 after snowballing their lead.
MAD Lions vs G2 Esports
- Picks: [MAD] Ornn, Jarvan IV, Corki, Jinx, Thresh vs [G2] Akshan, Viego, Kassadin, Jhin, Yuumi
- Bans: [MAD] LeBlanc, Caitlyn, Xin Zhao, Rakan, Pyke. [G2] Twisted Fate, Lee Sin, Diana, Wukong, Malphite
- Result: MAD win in 26:39 (Kills: MAD 12 – 4 G2)
- TL;DW: G2 drafted themselves a creative comp, compared to MAD's which is simpler to execute. Nevertheless, Kassadin was still a ticking time bomb and a thorn on MAD's side. Still, G2's lack of a conventional tank made them over rely on Yuumi's healing. Eventually, MAD's comp has scaled too much for G2 to handle and G2 failed their perfect run in the LEC Spring 2022 Week 1.
