Which VALORANT agent should you main as you try to climb in ranked? Does picking the most popular agent give you the best chances of winning? Further analysis
Riot's planned Yoru rework couldn't come any quicker, as the agent has by far the lowest win rate in the game. It's nearly a whole 2% lower than the next character on the list, KAY/O. (It's a shame, too, for KAY/O, given that the agent was the second to the most recent release in VALORANT.) But players must really not be having a good time on Yoru because he also has the lowest pick rate out of all 17 playable characters.
That said, his 0.93 K/D ratio isn't as abysmal as one might expect (comparatively, KAY/O has the lowest at 0.88), so players who do pick Yoru might not necessarily be the lowest fraggers on their squads. Even so, Yoru may not have much to offer in his current state to turn the tide of the game, and hopefully the promise of a rework can change that.
While those on the low win rate end of the spectrum unsurprisingly don't have fantastic pick rates, there is one particular anomaly that stands out. Omen is no doubt one of the more popular VALORANT agents, in part because he was one of the inaugural releases. However, the win percentage doesn't really back up the high selection rate. Omen only records a 46.3% win rate—the fourth lowest in the game. Although, we classify Omen here in the low-mid tier rather than the lowest tier as his numbers are closer to Cypher and Breach at 46.8% than Phoenix at a measly 45.2% win rate.
More interesting data points are seen on the other end of the popularity charts. Of course, it comes as no surprise that Jett is in the top 3 in terms of pick rate. However, win rate-wise, the Duelist falls rather flat at only 47.5%. We (generously) bump Jett to the mid-top tier here, though the agent could just as easily fall to the low-mid tier as the numbers are all quite close in the middle of the pack.
In fact, the most popular picks have little convincing data to back up their case in terms of win percentages: Reyna, with a whopping 72.5% selection rate, has an even lower win rate at 47 flat, falling out of the top 10 for that list. Sage might come second in the popularity rankings, but she doesn't fare much better in-game, with a 47.3 win percentage. At the least, Sova who comes fourth in picks posts a respectable win rate breaching the 48% mark.
Of course, the win/loss data are not always representative of the agent's strengths and weaknesses, as you might expect that a generally higher pick rate might also mean more players who may not have complete mastery over the character yet, leading to the losses. Another striking figure is how Astra is one of the top agents (unsurprisingly thanks to her utility) in terms of win rate, yet is very rarely picked—tied for the second least popular character on this patch.
Finally, at the top of the pack, Killjoy is far and away the best agent in terms of win percentage with 54.1%. Only she and Viper crossed the breakeven point, and both are also picked around 30% of the time. It's a decent frequency overall, though perhaps players might be encouraged to pick them up more often given these win percentages. It might also speak to the caliber needed to master these agents, with KJ and Viper utility—from the ults to the toxin walls—being extremely strategic moves that can turn the tide of the game.
