Veteran guard Gerald Henderson has decided to undergo hip surgery to repair a troublesome issue that will likely keep him out for the entire 2017-18 NBA season due to a lengthy recovery process.

The 29-year-old Henderson has been experiencing pain and stiffness in his hip for the last six seasons and would like to finish his career without constant and excruciating pain which began hampering his ability to play in games at all last season.

His $9.2 million contract was waived by the Philadelphia 76ers in June to remove his salary from the books, in order to retain the cap space.

Henderson released a statement via Hoops Hype regarding his decision to opt for a surgical procedure.

Despite receiving genuine interest from several NBA teams, I have made the decision to continue to evaluate surgical options on my left hip. I have been playing through severe pain that has made it difficult to play to the best of my ability. Now the pain has started to impact my everyday life off the court. My family, my agent and I are working closely with my medical team to give me all of the information I will need to make the best decision, personally and professionally. I am as competitive as they come and want to play. I will fully commit myself to getting healthy. I am thankful for the many opportunities I've had and I look forward to returning to playing in the NBA.

Prior to the release of his announcement, the Bucks, Warriors, and Raptors were all interested in the veterans services, but will now have to wait until he returns as a free agent for the 2018-19 season.

This will be Henderson's second hip surgery which he is hopeful will help alleviate the pain and get back to playing basketball.

Henderson averaged 9.2 points, 1.6 assists, and 2.6 rebounds last season for the Sixers.
