The New York Giants took cornerback Sam Beal out of Western Michigan on Wednesday in the NFL's supplemental draft. The Giants will now lose a third-round pick in next year's draft but they got some much-needed depth in the secondary for this upcoming season.

Beal was declared academically ineligible for this upcoming season which is what made him throw his hat into the supplemental draft. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is very excited about what they saw from the young cornerback, and they think he has the ability to ascend.

“He’s long, he’s very athletic for a corner, he has all the physical skills, he can carry the vertical, he has very good play speed, he shows instincts out there, he has ball awareness, he doesn’t panic when the ball is thrown at his guy, and he is a very willing tackler. We just feel it gives us a really talented young kid with the ability to ascend,” Gettleman said via Giants.com.

The Giants currently have eight cornerbacks on the roster, but only three have much experience. They have Eli Apple, Janoris Jenkins and William Gay who are expected to be the main guys playing this year, but after that is a good spot for Beal.

He is a little behind missing all of OTA's and trying to learn the new system but there is a realistic chance if he can catch on quick that he could be the fourth cornerback when the Giants start their season on September 9th against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
