The New York Giants are in need of a replacement for 38-year-old quarterback Eli Manning, who is entering the final year of his deal and is clearly on the decline.

In spite of rampant media criticism throughout his NFL tenure, Manning has had a very successful career, winning a pair of Super Bowls over Tom Brady and taking home Super Bowl MVP honors in both victories.

One of the reasons why Manning has been able to achieve so much in New York is due to his ability to shrug off criticism, and that is what Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is looking for in his signal-caller of the future:

“Being the quarterback of a team in this kind of a market is a load, is a mental load,” Gettleman said, according to Tom Rock of Newsday. “You’ve got to really vet out the backgrounds of these guys. . . . It’s more than just collecting data and looking at a guy’s physical talent. It’s about his makeup.”

While Gettleman has been chided for his questionable decision-making this offseason, he actually makes a point here. All the talent in the world won't matter if you can't handle the pressure, so he is wise in examining a quarterback's mental makeup before taking him.

“Some of them you have to dig so deep to see where they had adversity, it’s painful,” Gettleman said. “Everybody has adversity. Everybody.”

The Giants own the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft next week, and the general consensus is that they will be selecting a quarterback.
