The New York Giants were already down a star running back after Saquon Barkley suffered a torn ACL against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

They are also down a top receiver after Sterling Shepard was placed on the injured list on Wednesday.

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported Shepard sustained a turf toe injury at some point during Sunday's game. The Giants reportedly do not expect the former Oklahoma star to miss too much time, but Shepard will be forced to sit out at least three games after being placed on the short-term injured list.

Shepard has had some tough injury luck as of late. He missed six games in 2019 after suffering multiple concussions, resulting in career lows in receptions (57), reception yards (576) and yards per reception (10.1).

The 27-year-old caught all six of his targets for 47 yards in a Week 1 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and had gotten off to a solid start (two catches for 29 yards) against the Bears before limping to the locker room early in the game.

New York was hoping a healthy Shepard would be another weapon for second-year quarterback Daniel Jones alongside young pass-catchers like Darius Slayton and Evan Engram. Instead, they will have to wait and see when (or if) Shephard's turf toe improves.

In the meantime, Jones faces a difficult task: leading the 0-2 Giants forward without two of their most explosive offensive playmakers.

The Giants are bringing in Devonta Freeman to add depth in the backfield, but Slayton, Engram and Golden Tate will need to be more productive in the passing game in Shepard's absence.
