The New York Giants went out sad in the 2021 season, as they lost 22-7 to the Washington Football Team. Head coach Joe Judge made a very peculiar coaching decision when he opted to run quarterback sneaks on 2nd and 3rd down. The cowardly decision drew boos from the home crowd.
Judge put a hilarious spin on his baffling decision after the loss. He said that he was afraid of giving up a safety, as New York was backed up to their own five-yard line, and wanted more room to punt. The decision showed that he was not confident at all in New York's offense. Judge insisted, though, that it shows confidence in the team's defense and special teams.
Judge treating the offense like they are destined to screw up is partly why the Giants are as bad as they are. He is somewhat justified in his lack of confidence in the offense, though. New York has looked miserable this season due to brutal quarterback play, a weak offensive line and loads of injuries.
But Judge is also a major factor in the Giants' ineptitude. His coaching decisions don't match his insistence that the team plays hard and executes well. New York's struggles are not squarely on him but he does not help matters very much. His tough-guy routine in the face of criticism only makes him seem less qualified for the job.
With New York's 4-13 season wrapped up, Judge said that he used his own coaching decisions to learn what not to do. New York is expected to keep Judge for next season, though he didn't seem confident that they would after the loss.
