The San Francisco Giants placed outfielder Jorge Soler on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, the team announced. Soler, who signed with San Francisco during the offseason following his All-Star 2023 campaign with the Miami Marlins, suffered a right shoulder sprain. The move is retroactive to May 5. The Giants recalled outfielder Heliot Ramos in a corresponding move.

Soler, 32, has struggled so far in 2024. The powerful right-handed outfielder is slashing just .202/.294/.361/.655 across 34 games played. Soler has hit five home runs as well.

San Francisco wanted to add offense this offseason. Soler slashed .250/.341/.512/.853 with the Marlins in 2023. He also crushed 36 home runs for Miami. Soler was selected to his first All-Star game during the '23 campaign as well.

Soler led the league in home runs with 48 back in 2019 with the Kansas City Royals. Despite not making the All-Star game in 2019, he did earn some MVP consideration.

San Francisco was hoping he could replicate those results in 2024. And he still may be able to. It has been a difficult campaign up to this point for the veteran slugger, though.

For now, Soler will focus on returning to full health.

The Giants hold an underwhelming 16-21 record as of this story's writing. It has been a frustrating campaign so far for the ball club.

As a result, they are currently in fourth place in the National League West.

Soler is not the only signing that has not played up to expectations thus far. Starting pitcher Blake Snell, who is on the injured list, endured a miserable start to his Giants career.

Snell pitched to an 11.57 ERA across three games before suffering an injury. He did not sign until late in spring training, so perhaps his late start played a role in his frustrations.

Third baseman Matt Chapman has yet to find his rhythm at the plate. Chapman also signed with the Giants this past offseason, but has recorded a slash line of just .204/.257/.338/.595. Chapman has hit four home runs in 37 games played up to this point.

The Giants' offseason search for offense has not exactly paid many dividends yet. The team is 19th in batting average, 20th in OPS, 21st in home runs, and 23rd in runs scored.

San Francisco's pitching staff has not performed all that well either. They are 24th in team ERA, 24th in WHIP, 21st in strikeouts, and 22nd in home runs allowed.

In other words, there has not been many positives for this Giants ball club in 2024. It is still early in the '24 campaign and things can begin to trend in a positive direction. Losing Jorge Soler, however, is obviously far from ideal. He was one of the Giants' better hitters despite his struggles to begin the season.
