Steve Mariucci knows the New York Giants selected Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. In just two years he us already considered one of the very best running backs in football. Some would even gladly call him the elite, the very best.

Saquon Barkley could be more than just “the best running back in football” though. At least, that's how some people feel.

Former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci gave his opinions on the running back on NFL Total Access. And he seems to believe big things could potentially be coming for Saquon Barkley. In fact, he made a pretty bold statement, claiming that an MVP title is not out of the picture.

For those that do not want to watch the video of the prediction about Saquon Barkley, Dan Benton of giantswire.com has the transcript.

“Six running backs have made MVP in the last 25 years, but they did something special like rush for 2,000 yards or break the rushing record like LT did with 28 rushing touchdowns,” Mariucci said. “But Saquon is versatile. He had 91 receptions and a bunch of yards rushing as a rookie. He’s going to go over 2,000 yards again. He’s got a chance. If that team can get better and have a winning season, Saquon Barkley.”

Mariucci talks about past running backs that have won the MVP. He talks about how usually when they win it is because they did something “special.”

With Saquon Barkley, it could be his all-around game though. He has the potential to run for over 1,500 yards and rack up 100 receptions in a season. That would definitely put the running back on the MVP map.

Of course, there is another thing to worry about. The team's record. If the Giants are not winning, it is going to be tough for Saquon Barkley to win MVP.

For the MVP to be in Barkley's sights, New York is going to need to win. If they can become a playoff team, it's not insane to imagine the running back snatching up the award.
