The San Francisco Giants are in desperate need of some offense, and it looks like they are making an effort to get it.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Giants are viewed as the top bidder for outfielder Nicholas Castellanos, with Rosenthal noting that San Francisco's push has “discouraged” at least one other team from thinking it could sign him.

Castellanos split the 2019 campaign between the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs (he was traded to the Cubs at the deadline), slashing .289/.337/.525 with 27 home runs and 73 RBI over 664 plate appearances.

The 27-year-old was originally selected by the Tigers in the first round (44th pick overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft.

He made his big-league debut in 2013, playing in 11 games before becoming a full-time starter for Detroit the following year, when he slashed .259/.306/.394 with 11 long balls and 66 RBI across 579 trips to the dish.

Castellanos posted very similar numbers in 2015, slashing .255/.303/.419 with 15 dingers and 73 RBI through 595 plate appearances before enjoying a breakout year in 2016, when he registered a slash line of .285/.331/.496 with 18 homers and 58 RBI over 447 trips to the plate.

Since then, Castellanos has showed an impressive bat, as he slashed .272/.320/.490 with 26 home runs and 101 RBI in 2017 and followed that up by slashing .298/.354/.500 with 23 long balls and 89 RBI in 2018.

The main drawback with Castellanos is his defense, as he posted a UZR of minus-5.2 this past season and has never posted a positive UZR in his major-league career.

However, for a team like the Giants that badly needs bats, Castellanos fits the bill.
