During a presentation at CineEurope, Paramount hyped up Ridley Scott's Gladiator 2 starring Paul Mescal.
Per Variety, who attended CineEurope, Gladiator 2 was the “main event” of Paramount's presentation. The extended footage shown was dubbed “epic” footage that featured Mescal and Pedro Pascal.
Introducing the footage, Scott promised the sequel is “well worth the wait.” The first Gladiator movie came out in 2000. Paramount executive Mark Viane said that the movie will feature some of “the biggest action sequences ever put on film.”
Gladiator is one of Scott's most successful movies. It starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius. In the movie, he is betrayed by Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). He attempts to rise the ranks of the arena to avenge his family and defeat Commodus.
David Franzoni developed the story and produced Gladiator with Douglas Wick and Branko Lustig. Franzoni also co-wrote the script with John Logan and William Nicholson.
The movie was a big hit upon coming out in theaters. Gladiator grossed over $460 million worldwide on a budget of $103 million. It was nominated for a dozen Oscars and won five including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe.
What is Gladiator 2 about?
Nearly a quarter-century later, Ridley Scott is returning with Gladiator 2. In between the two installments, Scott has directed 17 features. These include American Gangster, Prometheus, The Martian, The Last Duel, House of Gucci, and Napoleon.
He first gained notoriety for his early sci-fi work. Scott directed Alien in 1979 which launched a huge franchise with nine total movie installments. The likes of James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed installments before Scott's return in 2012.
Prometheus was directed by Scott in 2012 and he followed that up with Alien: Covenant nearly five years later. Coming up, Fede Álvarez will direct Alien: Romulus. Scott will produce the movie and Cailee Spaeny will star in it.
Gladiator 2 picks up years after the events of the first movie. Mescal stars as Lucius Verus, the former heir to the Empire. He is the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus.

Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and May Calamawy also star in the movie. Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi reprise their roles from Gladiator.
Gladiator 2 star Paul Mescal has been a rising star in Hollywood lately. He first gained notoriety for his performance in Normal People. After a small role in Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter, Mescal starred in Aftersun. His performance in Aftersun landed him his first Oscar nomination. He has since starred in Carmen, All of Us Strangers, and Foe.
Other rising stars in the cast include Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn. The former is known for his roles in The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones, and The Last of Us. The latter starred in Stranger Things and will be a part of the MCU's Fantastic Four
Paramount will release Gladiator 2 on November 22, 2024. Scott directed the movie based on a script from David Scarpa. He will also produce it with Michael Pruss, Douglas Wick, Lucy Fisher, Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, and David Franzoni.
