Paramount+ recently announced that it’s renewing Criminal Minds: Evolution for a third season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The renewal comes ahead of the series’, which is a continuation of CBS’ long-running crime procedural, second — but technically 17th — season.

The upcoming season’s logline reads: “As the conspiracy unfolds, the BAU is met with an unexpected complication when serial killer Elias Voit (Zach Gilford) negotiates a deal that transfers him to federal custody in the BAU’s own backyard. The team faces its biggest threat yet and cannot emerge unscathed from the mind-bending consequences.”

Criminal Minds’ many returns and some continued absence

Regulars from when the series was still airing at CBS such as Joe Mantegna (David Rossi), A.J. Cook (Jennifer Jareau), Kirsten Vangsness (Penelope Garcia) and Aisha Tyler (Tara Lewis), along with Adam Rodriguez (Luke Alvez) and Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss). At the start of Evolution’s season one, Prentiss is already the Section Chief while Rossi took over her previous post as Unit Chief.

Fan-favorite Dr. Spencer Reid, played by Matthew Gray Gubler, didn’t return for Evolution. Neither did Beyond Border spinoff transplant Matt Simmons, played by Daniel Henney. In the show, their absence is explained as the two on special assignments. Henney stars in Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time as Lan Mandragoran. The series is set to return for its third season next year.

Gilford and Ryan-James Hatanaka have been promoted to series regulars. The second season will feature guest stars such as Felicity Huffman (as the late BAU chief Jason Gideon’s ex-wife, Dr. Jill Gideon), Clark Gregg (best known as Agent Coulson in the Avengers movies), Liana Liberato, Paul F. Tompkins, Tuc Watkins and Brian White.

Huffman’s role could expand as it was explained during her casting announcement that her character has a complicated history with Rossi, who is considered one of the founders of BAU along with Gideon.

Criminal Minds has long been a presence on Nielsen’s streaming charts. The original series is available to stream on both Hulu and Paramount+. Evolution is exclusive to Paramount+, but is available on Disney+ in other territories.

ABC Signature and CBS Studios produce the series. Long-time Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer also runs Evolution. She also serves as executive producer along with Breen Frazier, Chris Barbour, Glenn Kershaw and Mark Gordon.

Criminal Minds: Evolution’s second season will premiere June 6 on Paramount+.
