The PLAYERS Championship is not a major tournament, but there’s not a single-stroke event in the PGA TOUR that pays more. A grand total of $20 million will be given away this week at the TPC Sawgrass, and that’s including the tantalizing $3.7 million that the winner will walk away with on Sunday. Favorites to win THE PLAYERS Championship
Collin Morikawa (+1300). Morikawa is among the throng of players this 2021-22 PGA TOUR season still hunting for a win. But the difference between most of the other players from the 25-year-old Morikawa is that he has consistently flirted with success in the current campaign. Morikawa is 4/4 with all his starts concluding with him cracking the top 10. The last time he saw action, Morikawa had a T-2 in the Genesis Invitational last February. As for his form at TPC Sawgrass, it’s not an extensive one, having just made two starts in the Pete Dye-designed course. However, he fired a 66 in the last round of the 2021 PLAYERS Championship, the best among all players in that round during that tournament.
Jon Rahm (+1300). Rahm is also aching for a win after several close calls this season. In his last start, he had a T-17 in the Arnold Palmer Invitational – his sixth made cut in a row. He has not missed a cut his six starts in the TOUR this year, with his best showing during that span being a runner-up finish in the Sentry Tournament of Champions back in January and a T-3 in the Farmers Insurance Open late in the same month. Advanced stats also reinforce Rahm’s strong presence this season, as he is No. 1 in greens in regulation percentage (76.28%) and SG: Tee-to-Green (1.977).
Justin Thomas (+1500). It’s just a matter of time before Thomas finally scores a win this season based on how he’s been playing. After placing sixth in the Genesis Invitational last February, Thomas is now 6/6. In those starts, Thomas has made the top 10 four times, peaking with a solo third in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba back in November. As the reigning king of the PLAYERS Championship, When Thomas won this event in 2021, he went home with the dizzying top prize worth $2.7 million. He has a couple of top 10s and four top 25s in seven total career starts at TPC Sawgrass.
Sleepers to win THE PLAYERS Championship
Talor Gooch (+5000). The 30-year-old product of Oklahoma State is on the rise again. After missing the cut in the Genesis Invitational, Gooch took off with a T-7 in the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week. He was feeling it in the first two rounds, firing a 69 in the first and then a 68 in the second before the wheels fell off in the final two rounds. Nevertheless, Gooch is someone that offers great value, considering he already has four top 10s and is 11/13 this season. He started the campaign like a house on fire with four consecutive T-11 or better starts and also won the RSM Classic back in November.
Tommy Fleetwood (+9000). Ranked 49th in the world, Fleetwood rebounded from a missed cut in the Honda Classic by netting a T-20 last Sunday in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. But it’s really his resume at TPC Sawgrass that’s pushing his stock up as a sleeper this week in the 2022 PLAYERS Championship. Fleetwood has two top 7s in five starts at TPC Sawgrass, including a T-5 in the 2019 edition of this tournament.

Final 2022 THE PLAYERS Championship Prediction & Pick
Defending a tournament title isn’t common in the PGA TOUR, but Thomas has been clicking all season. The fact that he dominated the PLAYERS Championship in 2021 can be taken as a sign that it’s going to be at the TPC Sawgrass where he’ll really get it going by nailing his first win of the year.
