Well, Phil Mickelson won't be returning to Detroit or the Rocket Mortgage Classic anytime soon after this July 4th weekend.

That's because a newspaper report from the Detroit News decided now was the right time to publish a story containing old news with a guy that Phil Mickelson used to place bets with.

Phil Mickelson's attorney, Glenn Cohen, didn't dispute the substance of the article but questioned why the Detroit News found it necessary to do so. Mickelson had placed a bet with a bookie over 20 years ago who may have had mob ties and Mickelson was found to have done nothing wrong after an investigation took place. Now, Phil and his attorney have clapped back at the article.

“I'm disappointed they would curiously pick this week to write an article about a bet that was made over 20 years ago and a jury trial that took place in 2007, where the guy who was convicted is dead and where the only purpose for this article is to embarrass Phil Mickelson.” – Glenn Cohen via ESPN.

Mickelson had his own words to say and vowed to not return to the Rocket Mortgage Classic despite his great interactions with the fans and the city of Detroit.

Whatever the intended end result was for the Detroit Times clearly backfired here as Phil Mickelson is a big draw and a big name to the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Now, after this tournament concludes, all indicators from Mickelson himself point towards him not returning in the future.
