Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant will be the subject of a six-part docu-series titled “Promiseland,” which will chronicle rookie experiences across various sports, according to The Wrap. Future seasons will focus on the stories of other athletes, including basketball stars.

The series is in post-production and is set to be released in 2021. It is created and will be directed by Dexton Deboree, with DLP Media Group, RTG Features, Falkon Entertainment and Interscope Films producing it (per Shlomo Sprung of Forbes).

Deboree directed the documentary feature “Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1,” which is about the iconic Air Jordan sneaker.

The first season of “Promiseland” will examine Ja Morant’s journey from Crestwood high school in South Carolina to Murray State through his immediate success with the Grizzlies.

“With the global pandemic and civil unrest in America acting as a backdrop for this season, the series went far beyond that of simply a basketball story, revealing a side of Ja we could have never anticipated,” Deboree said in a statement. “We quite literally witness him become a man, find his voice amid the social landscape, and powerfully step into the shoes of a shining role model for both his community and for his generation. We went into this knowing Ja was something special, but emerge now believing he’s truly one of a kind.”

The “Promiseland” crew has been following Morant since the start of the 2019-20 campaign. He was also filmed through the bubble in Orlando, where the Grizzlies attempted to make the playoffs.

The series is currently being shopped to buyers and distributors.

“It was incredibly important to find a way to keep cameras rolling through everything,” Mike Hughes, CEO of DLP Media Group, said in a statement. “You only get one chance to capture a moment like this, and Ja became an incredible lens to view the changing world.”

Morant averaged 17.8 points and 7.3 assists per game en route to winning Rookie of the Year and rejuvenating the Grizzlies franchise in his electric rookie campaign.
