Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) has been confirmed by Rockstar Games on Friday. The game currently has no set release date, but Rockstar Games says that this game will be the series' most ambitious yet.

In a press statement, Rockstar Games made the announcement that the highly-anticipated GTA 6 is in active development. After talking about GTA 5 briefly and revealing that the next-gen versions of the game will come out on March 15, 2022, Rockstar finally released the bombshell:

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.

On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!”

Rockstar stopped short in naming their next game, so for the time being, we call it GTA 6. We've previously reported that the next game won't be coming out until 2025 to avoid crunch time. We also previously speculated that GTA 6's trailer will be coming out around February or March 2021, and lo and behold, one year later, we're finally only getting official confirmation that the game is coming out. Sadly, we don't even have a set release window yet. We just know that the game is in development. We just hope it doesn't go into development hell.

In all honesty, we've felt like the game might never see the light of day at all. As Rockstar mentioned in the statement, GTA 5 and GTA Online were extremely successful, so much so that we sincerely thought they'd be focusing on those two titles until the day they stop making the company any money. Thankfully, these fears could finally be laid to rest. GTA 6 is finally a reality.
