Hassan Whiteside almost made the Western Conference even better than it already is.

Whiteside was a free agent this summer and before re-upping with the Miami Heat, he seriously considered signing with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Via the Miami Herald:

“Portland was my second option,” Whiteside said at the team’s Saturday shootaround in Portland. “I would have came here.”

The answer from Whiteside was interesting, considering that Portland hasn’t figured prominently in the previous telling of his free agency courtship.

ESPN.com reported last week that Portland “chased” Whiteside in free agency, but nothing was said of Whiteside’s interest.

Imagine Hassan alongside Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum.

The Blazers have taken a somewhat surprising step back this season, battling with some injuries and sitting right on the fringe of the playoff picture in the Western Conference.

Lillard and McCollum do so much for the team and an inside presence would surely have helped them quite a bit.

And not just any inside presence as Whiteside is breaking out with his best individual season of his career in Miami right now, putting up averages of 17.8 points, 14.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.

What could have been in Portland.
