To all of our fellow Bringston Lions, it is official. The CW has canceled All American: Homecoming after three seasons. This news comes as a shock as the original All American series was recently renewed for a 7th season. The cast of All American: Homecoming received the news yesterday.
All American: Homecoming is the third show that has landed on the chopping block at the CW along with Walker and Superman & Lois which will end after its upcoming fourth season. The original All American series is the only scripted series from the pre-Nexstar CW.
All American: Homecoming follows the story of original All American character, Simone Hicks played by Clark Atlanta University alumna Geffri Maya, a young tennis star as she embarks on a new journey at the fictional HBCU, Bringston University in Atlanta, Georgia. Other beloved cast members include Cory Hardrict, Kelly Jenrette, Sylvester Powell, Camille Hyde, and Florida A&M alumus Peyton Alex Smith. Over the last two seasons, we see Simone and her friends navigate all the highs and lows of attending college. The show provided us with a small glimpse of what it is like to attend an HBCU as it touched on several topics from pledging to being a collegiate athlete, to more serious ones such as the underfunding of HBCUs and terrorism.
Both All American and All American: Homecoming comes from writer and producer, Nkechi Okoro Carroll. Carroll who serves as the show’s executive producer/showrunner had a lot to say about the news.
“I’m devastated to learn that All American: Homecoming will not be moving forward with more episodes and that this new season premiering in July will be our final one,” she said. “However, I am so very grateful to have worked with this incredible cast and crew, led by Geffri Maya, to bring the authentic HBCU experience to your screens for the last three seasons. We made this show for the culture and thank our loyal audience and fans for taking this ride with us. We made this show so that our community, our kids (and their dreams), could be seen and celebrated every week and we are proud to say we accomplished that mission… Especially with this exciting final season which we can’t wait to show you all. So, with a heavy but proud heart, I give one final shoutout to our favorite Bringston Lions!”
Although this news still comes as a surprise the fate of All American: Homecoming has been in question for a while. The license fee for the series was cut significantly last year to $500,000-$750,000 per episode, that amount is even lower this year. Viewers received news that there was trouble afoot when it was announced that one of the main cast members, Peyton Alex Smith, who plays Damon Sims on the show would be demoted to a recurring character. Although popular amongst the younger demographic All American: Homecoming drew in fewer overall viewers. Which is a main focal point for the CW, to broaden the appeal of their shows beyond young adults.
It saddens us to see another great television show face cancelation. Especially one that highlighted the importance and significance of attending an HBCU. Many believed that All American: Homecoming the potential to be the next A Different World, unfortunately, it seems like that won’t be happening.
All American: Homecoming will air for its third and final season on July 8 on the CW.
