The Savannah State Tigers suffered a 21-14 defeat against Tuskegee University during their homecoming game. Despite initially taking a 14-7 lead, things took a turn for the worse.

Starting quarterback Jadon Adams, who completed 11 out of 19 passes for 182 yards, was replaced by redshirt freshman Christian Burks. Adams made four costly turnovers, including an interception and three fumbles. Head Coach Aaron Kelton, displeased with Adams' performance, discussed the decision to bench him with a Clutch Points reporter. “Four turnovers. You can't win if you keep turning the ball over,” Coach Kelton emphasized.

Christian Burks entered the game in the fourth quarter with 6 minutes and 53 seconds remaining, aiming to tie the game. After a stalled drive, Burks led a promising possession that could have resulted in a game-tying score. He connected with wide receiver Da'Shun Mitchell for a 26-yard pass, bringing the Tigers to the red zone. On first and goal, Burks attempted a fade route to wide receiver Brent Carr in the back corner of the endzone. Carr fought through a defender, catching the ball and dragging his foot, leading the Savannah State sideline to believe it was a touchdown. However, after a referee conference, it was ruled an incomplete pass, leaving the Savannah State fans and sideline in disbelief.

Speaking about the late-game play in the postgame interview, Coach Kelton expressed uncertainty. “I don't know if he was in. I'll have to review the tape and zoom in. It's difficult because he made a diving catch, and it appeared that his foot was dragging, but I couldn't see any pellets coming up.” On the very next play, Burks threw an interception to sophomore defensive back Mikael King while attempting to connect with senior wide receiver Da'Shun Mitchell, effectively ending the game and any hopes of a comeback. Burks finished the day with 60 passing yards, completing 5 out of 9 attempts, and one interception.

Tuskegee University dominated on the offensive front, accumulating over 325 yards of total offense. They were led by freshman running back Zina Mulbah, who rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Defensively, Tuskegee played a turnover-heavy game, forcing 5 turnovers and recording 3 sacks, despite giving up 269 yards of total offense.

The Savannah State Tigers are currently on a downward spiral, enduring a five-game losing streak. This marks the third time this season that the team has lost by a touchdown or less. Their next matchup will be at home against Benedict College (6-0) on October 28th at 3 PM EST.
