The Miami Heat had a chance to go up 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics. Instead, the Heat laid a complete egg in Game 4, scoring just 11 points in the first quarter and getting blown out of the water. Miami trailed by as many as 32 points and wound up taking home a 102-82 loss to tie the series at 2-2.

After the debacle, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra summarized what went wrong:

“I think probably more than anything our offense really hurt us at the beginning,” Spoelstra said. “They just weren't getting the purposeful execution that you need to on the road. They (Celtics) were able to get some relief points from that, get to the free throw line, and they jumped out to that that lead and that was the story for the rest of the game. We're not making any excuses. They outplayed us tonight for sure.”

The Heat went down 18-1 before finally making their first basket of the game with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter. Miami missed its first 14 shots before Victor Oladipo's 3-pointer.

This happened despite the absence of Marcus Smart, though the return of Robert Williams helped bolster Boston's defense. Williams only played 19 minutes in Game 4, but he made a major impact.

When it was all said and done, Miami's starters managed only 18 points for the entire game. Eighteen. That was historically bad and helped turn this game into a laugher. Jimmy Butler struggled to the tune of six points on 3-of-14 shooting after returning from a knee injury.

The Heat were also without Tyler Herro because of an injury, depriving them of a key offensive weapon. Oladipo wound up leading Miami in scoring with 23 points off the bench.

Needless to say, the Heat will need a much better performance from their offense on their home court in Game 5. That's easier said than done against this Celtics defense, especially with key pieces banged up. Spoelstra will have to pull out all the stops.
