According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Miami Heat and small forward Justise Winslow agreed to a three-year, $39 million extension on Friday. The deadline to reach an agreement on a rookie scale contract is October 15th.

The Athletic's Shams Charania adds that Miami has a team option on the fourth year of Winslow's deal.

The Heat selected Winslow with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and the defensive standout has averaged 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 0.9 steals per game in three seasons with Miami (per Basketball Reference). Winslow showed significant progress with his outside jumper last season, knocking down 38.0 percent of his three-point attempts after converting just 25.8 percent of his threes in his first two seasons.

Winslow's pay rate falls in line with that of players like Boston Celtics shooting guard Marcus Smart, who signed a four-year, $52 million deal with the Celtics in July. Like Winslow, Smart is a stout defensive player with playmaking abilities but has had issues knocking down jump shots.

The Heat are expected to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference this season after going 44-38 last season and earning the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Winslow's continued development will be an integral piece of their success but the hope is that Winslow can make a Jimmy Butler or Kawhi Leonard-like jump as a player, two other players who came into the league with a defensive reputation but obvious weaknesses as a scorer.
