The 2020 Heisman Trophy finalists were announced on Thursday evening: Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, teammate and wide receiver DeVonta Smith, Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, and Florida QB Kyle Trask.

This year's Heisman race is considered to be especially tight, as no clear front-runner has emerged. In 2019, LSU QB Joe Burrow was the odds-on favorite to take home the trophy.

Smith has been the best wideout in the country, by any metric or set of eyes. He leads the nation with 98 receptions and 1,511 receiving yards, including 17 touchdown passes. The senior is seeking to become the first receiver to win the award since Michigan's Desmond Howard in 1991. The last non-QB to win the Heisman was also a member of the Crimson Tide: Derrick Henry in 2015.

After beating out Bryce Young in the preseason to win the QB1 gig, Jones — a redshirt junior who lit up the Citrus Bowl last year — has tossed 32 touchdowns against four interceptions, helping lead the Tide to a dominant 11-0 record and earning his spot as a Heisman finalist.

The Tide's prolific QB-WR duo strengthened both of their Heisman cases in the SEC Championship Game, racking up huge numbers in the 52-46 win over Florida.

Trask was not too shabby, either, in the loss, throwing for 408 yards and three TDs. For the season, the senior QB and Heisman finalist has recorded 43 touchdowns for the Gators.

Lawrence is the surefire No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and is polishing off one of the greatest careers in college football history. He's 34-1 as a starter for Clemson in his career, though this marks his first appearance as a Heisman finalist.

“It would be a crying shame if the Heisman didn't attach their name to Trevor Lawrence,” Swinney said after the ACC Championship. “I know that's become a stat award, but if you watch college football and you don't know that's the best player in the country? I don't know what you're looking at.”

Instead of a lavish ceremony in New York, the winner of the 2020 Heisman will receive the award in a virtual event to be aired on ESPN on Jan. 5.
