The Charlotte Hornets have been doing an extensive search for their next head coach, with numerous candidates interviewing for the vacancy. But, Michael Jordan and the front office have finally decided who will lead LaMelo Ball and the squad for the foreseeable future.

Per Woj, the Hornets are hiring Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson on a four-year deal:

Atkinson last served as a head coach for the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020 before being let go. Since then, he coached with the Clippers for a season then joined Steve Kerr's bench in the Bay Area and is currently helping the Dubs try to chase an NBA title.

The Hornets meanwhile fired James Borrego shortly after the 2020-21 campaign ended after they once again failed to progress past the play-in tournament. Nevertheless, there are some promising pieces on this Charlotte roster, headlined by LaMelo Ball. He's coming off an All-Star season and profiles to be the franchise cornerstone for many years to come. But, it's clear they need more talent, especially in their frontcourt, in order to actually be competitive in the Eastern Conference.

The Hornets finished with a 43-39 record and ultimately secured the last play-in spot but the Hawks blew them out in the #9 vs #10 game. Atkinson brings lots of NBA coaching experience to the table and hopefully, he can help Charlotte get to the playoffs in 2023.
