Charlotte Hornets young star LaMelo Ball has been named the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year. This award is given by Sports Illustrated to the player who has the best breakout season. This is yet another award that the young Hornets star can add to his collection after winning the Rookie of the Year award last season.

Ball has really started to shape into a great player and play much better than many thought he would in the NBA. He has been the reason for the Hornets' early-season success as they are really starting to form into a nice team because of the pieces that they have put around Ball. The Hornets might be a few years away from a deep playoff run, but the front office has to be excited about the future of this team. They're currently 14-12 on the year and were playing much better before most of their roster had to be sidelined due to COVID-19.

LaMelo Ball had a great game against arguably the best defender in the NBA in Jrue Holiday as he dropped 36 points and nine assists. He has done things like this throughout his young NBA career that show that he's going to be a player to keep an eye on for the next decade and then some.
