As Houston football makes their Big 12 debut Saturday, they are unveiling new uniforms for their first game in the conference. However, these uniforms pay a special tribute to the old Houston Oilers' uniforms of the 1970s and 1980s.

The uniforms are an ode to the class Oilers “Luv Ya Blue” era in which fans cheered for the former NFL team which wore the light blue jerseys. The cheer and motto became a regular part of Oilers home games at the Astrodome before the team moved to Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans in the late 1990s. Though Houston got another football team when the Houston Texans joined the NFL in 2002, the Oilers were Houston's original team.

The Tennessee Titans revealed in July that they will also do a similar throwback uniform to the Oilers.

Ahead of the uniform's debut, former Olympic gold medalist and University of Houston track and field star Carl Lewis narrated an epic trailer which unveiled the new uniforms and paid tribute to the city of Houston.

“Houston is tradition, a place with a long history of winning. Houston is the future, never afraid to break boundaries, creating a brighter future for the world and exploring beyond our horizons. Houston is home. This city, rich in culture, instilled with pride. This place is more than just a pin on a map, it's a way of life. This is for the city that always has our back, this one is for the people that call this place home. Love you Houston, this one's for you,” via the Houston Cougars Twitter page.

The Cougars will show off their uniforms in their opening game versus the UTSA Roadrunners. Prior to joining the Big 12, Houston was part of the American Athletic Conference since 2015.
