The New York Jets have been linked to free agent running back Le'Veon Bell ever since he opted to sit out the entire 2018 NFL season. However, it appears Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman could serve as a contingency plan.

There is no question that New York will look to fortify its talent in the backfield this offseason. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Jets could potentially go after Coleman if they do not sign Bell.

“If the Jets don't push for Le'Veon Bell, I hear Tevin Coleman is very attractive to them and someone they believe can spark their run game.”

The prospect of the Jets signing either of these two running backs is certainly not too far-fetched. They have over $100 million in cap space to work with this offseason. Bell or Coleman would be a healthy upgrade at the running back position, however, the latter could potentially provide more bang for his buck.

Coleman has largely served as a complementary option in Atlanta's backfield over the last few years. However, that changed when running back Devonta Freeman missed nearly the entire 2018 campaign with injury. As a result, he rushed for 800 yards and four touchdowns on 4.8 yards per carry. He was also a force in the passing game with 32 receptions for 276 yards and five touchdowns.

Bell has made it clear that he wants to be one of the highest-paid non-quarterbacks in the league. His asking price could ultimately prove to be a bit too much even for the Jets' deep pockets. Although Coleman is also looking for his big payday, he will likely come at a far more reasonable deal than Bell would.
