The collapse of the Indianapolis Colts late into the 2021 season will weigh heavily upon the minds of fans in Indy throughout the offseason. Having entered the final two weeks of the season with a 9-6 record, the Colts managed to shoot themselves in the foot, dropping their last two matches and missing out on the postseason.

In order to avoid a similar catastrophic letdown in 2022, the Colts will look to make some big moves in the offseason. The organization is seeking a return to the playoffs next year, so they will be hoping to acquire some difference-makers via free agency. The Colts aren't too far from being contenders, but there are still some clear issues on the roster. With that in mind, here are three players the Colts should be targeting during the 2022 NFL offseason.

Colts Free Agent Targets for 2022 NFL Offseason

3. Allen Robinson – Wide Receiver

While Michael Pittman has established himself as a solid wideout in the pros, the Colts lack depth behind the former USC product. T.Y. Hilton can't be relied upon on a weekly basis due to his frequent injury woes, and neither Parris Campbell nor Zach Pascal looks set to make a leap in 2022. Thus, the Colts need to target a proven wideout in free agency in order to alleviate some of the pressure on Pittman and also to give Carson Wentz another reliable option to target on offense.

Robinson has proven he can take on the role of a WR1 in the past, and a tandem of him and Pittman could open up the offense for the Colts and make Jonathan Taylor even more deadly, if possible. Robinson likely isn't too keen on re-upping with the Bears after a significant down-year in 2021 that saw the 28-year-old turn in the worst statistical season of his NFL career. Robinson caught just 38 passes for 410 yards and one touchdown this season, struggling to develop a rapport alongside rookie QB Justin Fields. A move to Indy could help reignite the career of the former star wideout, while also bringing marquee improvements to the Colts as a whole.

2. Ahkello Witherspoon – Cornerback

The Indianapolis Colts were rumored to be interested in Witherspoon back in the 2017 NFL Draft, but the DB ended up with the 49ers. Witherspoon latched on with the Steelers in 2021 and despite only playing in 12 games for Pittsburgh, the 25-year-old had a solid season. Witherspoon logged three interceptions, nine pass breakups, 15 tackles, and one tackle for loss this season, all while starting just three games for the Steelers. After missing out on Witherspoon in 2017, GM Chris Ballard could look to get his hands on the Colorado product via free agency.

Witherspoon will likely be available on a low-cost deal for the Colts, but could be a great fit in Matt Eberflus' defense. Taking a chance on Witherspoon would be a smart move for the Colts, who could end up with a potential starting secondary member at an extremely team-friendly price. While he's struggled with consistency at points, this move would create flexibility for the Colts to address other positions while also getting a quality player who fits their system.

1. JuJu Smith-Schuster – Wide Receiver

The most glaring need for the Indianapolis Colts this offseason has to be the wide receiver position. In addition to a potential Robinson signing, adding a young, talented threat out of the slot such as JuJu Smith-Schuster could be a pivotal move for Indy. Smith-Schuster may have fallen out of favor in Pittsburgh amid the emergence of Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool, paired with the injury that held him out for most of the season. While Smith-Schuster could end up re-signing with the Steelers, there is a ton of uncertainty regarding the future at quarterback in Pittsburgh, which could sway the wideout towards testing free agency.

With Smith-Schuster coming off an injury, the Colts may be able to nap him up at a relatively cheap price tag. Adding a talent such as Smith-Schuster to the offense would add an element to Indy's aerial attack that they sorely lacked in 2021. Smith-Schuster excels out of the slot and would likely fill that role in Indianapolis. Wentz needs a quick wide receiver who can act as a safety net for the streaky quarterback, and Smith-Schuster has the potential to be that player.
