Jacob deGrom is a household name in baseball. The former ninth round pick has acquired numerous accolades since his MLB career in 2014, and is currently spending his eighth year as the starting pitcher for the New York Mets. Jacob deGrom was raised in a humble home in Florida by loving and supportive parents. Tony, an AT&T lineman, built a batting cage for his son to practice his craft early on. This enabled him to go through his school years as an athlete. After moving up to college, the aspiring shortstop eventually played his usual position for his first two seasons at Stetson University. In his junior year, however, he played relief pitcher for the Stetson Hatters in addition to his original role. The team quickly noticed his potential, and deGrom hasn't looked back since.
As one of the current premier pitchers in Major League Baseball, the Florida native has racked up quite the resume. His career highlights include being named NL Rookie of the Year, garnering four All-Star selections, and receiving two NL Cy Young Awards.
Of course, beside him during his rise to stardom was his ever supportive parents. But shortly after his high school graduation, the four-time All Star met his future wife and lifelong supporter Stacey Harris.
Harris is also a Florida native, born to parents Nina and Thomas Harris. She was raised in Lake Helen with one other sibling, a younger sister named Amanda Lynn. She previously worked night shifts, working with people with sleep apnea under various clinical studies. On the other hand, deGrom was still trying to put the baseball world on notice. In fact, the Stetson alum at the time was climbing his way up from the minor leagues. It's safe to say he's lucky to have found someone who has been with him since day one.
According to previous interviews, Harris met the then-aspiring baseball player at a bull-riding event in Ocala. They were still on their late teenage years at the time. DeGrom popped the question on Christmas 2013, after seven long and fruitful years of courtship.
Both deGrom and Harris do not have a social media presence, as it seems they are content with keeping their relationship on the down low. However, the Mets pitcher has spoken fondly of his wife in previous interviews with the New York Post, describing her as a “very determined girl.”
“We met through mutual friends. She’s kind of like me, easy going.”
The two got married in New Smyrna, Florida in November 2014 and lived together in DeLand. The All-Star later expressed to the New York Post how nervous he was during the event.
“I was really nervous for my wedding, and I didn’t think I would be. I was standing up at the altar waiting on her to walk down — oh man, was I nervous! When she got down there, I wasn’t as bad. And she even said, she goes, ‘I’ve never seen you so serious in your life.’”
Likely due to deGrom's work, they are now currently living in New York City's Upper East Side. They have a Maltese and Yorkie mix called Pixie, who has kept Harris company while deGrom was away working.
The couple later on had two children: a son, Jaxon Anthony, born in April 2016, and a daughter, Aniston Grace, born just almost two years after in February 2018.
The right-handed pitcher departed in the middle of his 2016 season when Jaxon was born. A few days after, he was put on family emergency leave and missed more games after his firstborn child remained in the hospital due to health complications. According to ESPN, deGrom's manager Terry Collins was in contact communication.
“I've spoken to him every day. He's where you would expect him to be. He's not sleeping much. We're certainly rooting for him and Stacey and the baby to hang in there. … It's a real-life situation. Certainly we take the game of baseball very seriously. This changes a lot of things. He's such a good guy. Stacey is outstanding. You sit here the last few days — and those guys in [the clubhouse] can all tell you — they do the best they can to stay in touch with him. We're all praying and pulling for him.”
