There were rumors that Andy Dalton could join the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was released by the Cincinnati Bengals. On Wednesday, Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell revealed on #PFTPM podcast that they did have some discussions with Dalton and his agent.

Said Caldwell,

“We did have some discussions with his agent and him and I guess I’ll leave it at that.”

Dalton ultimately ended up with the Dallas Cowboys, which leaves Gardner Minshew and Josh Dobbs on top of the Jaguars depth chart. The team also added Jake Luton through the draft, but he isn't going to be pushing Minshew for the starting job.

The Jaguars have made it clear that Minshew is the starting quarterback heading into the 2020 season, but a veteran quarterback to push him, and be in the locker room would make a lot of sense.

“I think you always want someone there to push and challenge him and also for security and to be able to sleep at night because as we all know we learned last year you’re eleven or twelve plays away from losing your starting quarterback for a large portion of time … So last year we went into the season and Nick Foles got injured eleven plays into the first game of the season and that’s where kind of the Minshew Mania took off from there, so you always want to have some type of depth at that position, someone to come in and push the starter.

Veteran quarterback Cam Newton is still on the open market, but so far it seems the Jaguars aren't going to make a move to bring him in. Minshew Mania is getting ready for its first full season in Jacksonville, without competition.
