Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson apparently played a key role in Urban Meyer's decision to hire Darrell Bevell as the new offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

James Palmer of NFL Network reported a conversation between Wilson and Meyer had a “huge impact” on Meyer deciding on Bevell as his OC with the Jaguars. According to Palmer, Wilson told Meyer that Bevell was terrific in terms of getting him “ready to perform at a high level very quickly his rookie season.”

Wilson was a third-round pick for the Seahawks in the 2012 NFL draft. But he won the job out of camp and immediately established himself as a franchise quarterback.

The former Wisconsin product went 11-5 in his rookie season, throwing for over 3,100 yards and rushing for nearly 500 more en route to being named to the Pro Bowl. Wilson has continued to develop into one of the very best quarterbacks in the NFL.

Obviously, that kind of progression is appealing to the Jaguars as they prepare to select Clemson star Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's NFL draft.

Lawrence is a bigger physical specimen than Wilson, but he has similar traits in terms of escapability and possessing a pretty strong deep ball. That would seem to give Bevell a decent frame of reference as he tries to set Lawrence up for success.

Jacksonville has long been starved for a franchise quarterback. Lawrence is unlikely to be a franchise savior for the Jaguars though as soon as he steps on the field. But Bevell might be able to help him unlock his potential sooner, rather than later.
