Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell trolls Rudy Gobert over early ejection

Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert

Tempers appear to have cooled down following Utah Jazz big man Rudy Gobert’s outburst minutes into the team’s matchup against the Houston Rockets on Thursday night.

Gobert’s fit led to his immediate ejection — and will likely incur a hefty fine for the 26-year-old — and it seems that the 7-foot-1 center has learned his lesson. Nevertheless, teammate Donovan Mitchell is intent on reminding the big fellow of his rather childish behavior by poking fun at Gobert.

Mitchell turned to Twitter to come up with his own meme depicting the team’s reaction to Gobert’s extremely early exit on Thursday:

The Jazz can certainly afford to laugh out loud, as the ejection of their defensive stalwart did very little to throw them off their game. In fact, they absolutely destroyed the Rockets, finishing the blowout with a 118-91 final tally.

However, it wasn’t Mitchell who led the way for the Jazz on Wednesday, as last season’s rookie sensation only registered six points (on 3-of-9 shooting), no 3-pointers, one rebound, two assists, and two steals in this one. This game was a wire-to-wire blowout, though, so Mitchell played only 26 minutes on the evening, which is well below his usual workload.

Despite losing the reigning Defensive Player of the Year three minutes into the ballgame, Utah’s defense was on point throughout the contest. They held James Harden to a season-low 15 points (on 5-of-16 shooting), while Chris Paul was equally ineffective with 12 points (on 5-of-11 shooting) and just five assists. Houston’s backcourt duo combined for 12 turnovers, which accounted for more than half of the team’s total.

With the win, the Jazz have improved to 13-13 and are next scheduled to take the court in a back-to-back set on Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs and on Monday versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
