The Utah Jazz and New York Knicks have talked about a potential Donovan Mitchell trade, but no deal is imminent and fans shouldn't expect for one to happen soon.

But why is New York not rushing to trade for Mitchell? They have the assets to make a move for him anyway, so why risk the Jazz sending him elsewhere?

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, while the Knicks have every motivation to trade for the explosive guard, they simply don't want to overpay or bid against themselves. Put simply, they seem confident that they have the ability to put the best offer to the Jazz to land Mitchell.

With that said, as the Jazz assess the market value of Mitchell, the Knicks will simply be keeping an eye on the situation and move accordingly.

“Utah talked with the Knicks early last week, exchanged some ideas of what a potential Donovan Mitchell deal might look like. Now, Utah is out talking to the rest of the league seeing what else might be available to them,” Woj explained, via ClutchPoints Twitter.

“I do think they'll reconnect with the Knicks at some point in this offseason … New York doesn't want to just bid against itself, offer up more and more without a sense there's somebody else in the marketplace doing that. I do think any potential Donovan Mitchell deal is going to take some time.”

The Jazz are asking for a lot for Donovan Mitchell, with earlier reports they are seeking four at least four to five picks. With that, it's only natural for the Knicks to see what other teams are willing to offer and top that instead of overpaying.

For now, fans just have to wait and see what ends up happening to Mitchell. He could very well end up with the Knicks, though the Jazz have complete control of what to do with him.
