New York Jets head coach Adam Gase is taking ownership for quarterback Sam Darnold's struggles this season.

Gase acknowledged part of the reason he was hired was to advance Darnold's progression and mold him into a franchise quarterback:

“I came here to help him and help him develop his career and we haven’t been able to do that, Gase said, via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. “That’s why these games are so important, to help him continue to grow. I haven't done a good enough job.”

However, the Jets coach also alluded to struggles on the offensive line and a shortage of dependable players at the skill positions as factors contributing to Darnold's poor numbers:

“At the same time, that’s what’s frustrating about the quarterback position, you do need 10 other guys to do their job as well,” Gase said, via Vacchiano. “When he throws one of those really good balls and it’s dropped, that’s frustrating.”

Darnold has lost all seven of his starts. He is completing just 58.7 percent of his pass attempts and has thrown just three touchdown passes against eight interceptions. Darnold has also missed four games due to injury.

Gase, meanwhile, has endured endless criticism and speculation about his job security. Many have pointed to the current success being had by Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill—whom Gase coached in Miami—as an indicator the former Dolphins coach is hardly the offensive savant he was once marketed to be.

It remains to be seen what the future has in store for both Darnold and Gase, especially with the Jets primed to land the No. 1 pick.

But Gase is taking some responsibility for Darnold's failures as an NFL quarterback.
