The New York Jets and Detroit Lions are set to take the field for Monday Night Football for the season opener that will have a few notable players inactive for the contest.

The Jets are set to open up the year without wide receiver Jermaine Kearse while the Lions will play without running back Ameer Abdullah.

Kearse is currently recovering from an abdomen procedure that he underwent just prior to the start of the season that had put his status for Week 1 up in the air, which New York has elected to go the precautionary route with the situation. The team is hoping to count on him as one of their primary receiving options for rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. In his first campaign with the Jets, he had a breakout year posting a career-high 65 catches on 102 targets for 810 receiving yards and five touchdowns. This saw him post two 100-yard receiving performances while hauling in five or more catches five times.

New York is hoping that he and speedy wideout Robby Anderson can form a dynamic duo in the passing game for Darnold to depend on his work his way through his first year in the league. With Kearse out of the lineup, it could see more balls come Anderson's way while offseason Terrelle Pryor and Quincy Enunwa may both be a factor. The Jets may also look to involve their running backs Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell more in the passing game.

The Lions decided to make Ameer Abdullah a healthy scratch for the contest, which may result in a running back by committee approach with LeGarrette Blount, rookie Kerryon Johnson, and Theo Riddick. Blount is expected to get the start while Johnson and Riddick will get their fair share of playing time out of the backfield. Through his first three years in the league, Abdullah has struggled to break through due with play while also dealing with injuries.
