The New York Jets have officially decided to make Sam Darnold the youngest quarterback to start Week 1 in the modern era. Meanwhile, the departure of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has resulted in quarterback Josh McCown entering the 2018 NFL season as the backup.

McCown is not too enthusiastic about his backup role. However, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, he acknowledged Darnold's readiness as the starter.

McCown acknowledged he's “personally bummed,” but he said Darnold proved he's ready.

“Obviously, as a competitor, you'd love to play, but I kind of understood which direction it was headed,” said McCown, who will make $10 million in his backup role. “I'm excited for our team and excited for the future. … We're backing it 100 percent.”

McCown's disappointment is certainly understandable. He is coming off a solid year as the Jets' starter after throwing for 2,926 yards, 18 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. However, it became evident early on in the offseason that New York was looking for an upgrade under center.

It remains to be seen whether or not Darnold is truly the answer. Fortunately, he has gotten off to a stellar start. McCown is not the only quarterback the rookie had to beat out as it became evident that the Jets had three viable options under center with Bridgewater included. It is clear that Darnold had done more than enough to show the coaching staff he was ready following their trade with the New Orleans Saints.

The backup role is nothing new for McCown. New York will have the benefit of experimenting with Darnold while having the veteran has a solid contingency.
