Adding to what has already been a busy offseason, the New York Jets announced Thursday night that they had agreed to terms with defensive back Lamarcus Joyner, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Signed to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, Joyner's addition to the team's secondary would seem to solidify the safety position for the Jets after they franchise-tagged Marcus Maye earlier in the year.

After years of mismanagement and failed expectations, the franchise is clearly looking to engineer a quick turnaround under new head coach Robert Saleh.

After playing for the Los Angeles Rams during the first five years of his career, Joyner signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in the lead-up to the 2019 NFL season. Having earned a reputation as a versatile and athletic DB capable of holding the passing game in check, the veteran out of Florida State signed a four-year deal worth $42 million with the Raiders, expecting to be a staple in the defense as the organization looked to contend.

Unfortunately for both Joyner and the Raiders, it quickly became apparent that the two sides were an ill fit.

Not only did the defensive back battle Covid-19 concerns for most of the season, but he was vocal about his displeasure in having to operate in a Nickel scheme. Working in an unfamiliar setting, Joyner not only put up career-low numbers but started only six of the 14 games he was active in during the 2020 season. Looking to provide both sides a new start, the Raiders cut Joyner early last week in a move that will save the team upwards of $8 million.

In New York, Joyner will not only get to play the traditional safety role he is most comfortable with but is expected to be named a starter heading into the season.

For a Jets franchise looking to fill a myriad of holes on their roster, the upside that Joyner provides is well worth the risk.
