New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold won't just miss the Week 2 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, his timeline to recover from mono sits at between three and seven weeks.

The No. 3 overall pick in 2018, the Jets entered 2019 hoping Darnold would ascend the ranks of NFL quarterbacks. They gave him weapons in RB Le'Veon Bell and WR Jamison Crowder, an improved offensive line, and an offensive-minded head coach. However, all hope from Darnold will be gone as getting him cured of mono is now the top priority.

It's not as if Darnold could play with the disease. There are multiple factors in why the Jets won't do that.

Mono is highly contagious — the last thing they want to do is infect the entire squad. It also can lead to the swelling of organs, which are susceptible to a rupture if taken hard contact. Darnold may also lose weight as eating gets harder due to swollen glands, a loss of appetite, and sore throat.

The second-year former Trojan may also feel fatigue as well as other symptoms that would hinder quarterbacking in the NFL.

It's fair to say the Jets don't want to risk trotting him out, for the safety of their team and presumed franchise quarterback.

Instead of Darnold, Jets faithful will witness Trevor Siemian conduct the New York offense. A former starter with the Denver Broncos, Siemian is capable of managing a game for the team. However, the loss of Darnold puts more pressure on the defense and head coach Adam Gase to scheme up an efficient offense for his interim starter.
