Big things are expected from New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold as he enters his third NFL season. The former No. 3 overall pick didn't have quite the breakout season last year that many expected, but this time around, the Jets have gone out and acquired a whole bunch of new weapons for their franchise quarterback.

However, while QB's and other players usually have time in the offseason to build chemistry with new teammates, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Darnold has had to switch up his approach.

“It is different,” Darnold said during a conference call Tuesday, via Al Iannazzone of Newsday. “I’m not in-person with the guys, getting to know the guys. But I’ve been texting and FaceTiming some guys every now and then, trying to build as much of a connection as we can. But it’s hard.”

Among the Jets' new offseason acquisitions are free-agent wide receiver Breshad Perriman and Baylor star Denzel Mims, whom the team took in the second round of the recent NFL Draft. The team also recently signed veteran running back Frank Gore to help the team's rushing attack and drafted Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton with the No. 11 overall pick to try and better protect Darnold.

“Hopefully things get a lot better, and we’re able to play this season,” Darnold said. “Right now, we’re just preparing how we would normally prepare. Obviously not in person but we’re still going through things as normal and we got a pretty good setup with how we’ve been meeting. Everything’s good.

Last season, the former USC star completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
