As Sam Darnold works back from a sprained foot that he suffered week nine against the Miami Dolphins, his status for week 12 against the New England Patriots is still unclear. Darnold isn't using his walking boot anymore and the hope is he will be back, but the team is still taking it day by day.
“I don’t know,” Todd Bowles said Monday via The New York Daily News. “It’s still early for him. We’ll see how it goes through the bye week and how it looks next week. I’ll have a better idea. If not, Josh (McCown) will line up and we’ll go.”
If Darnold can't go it will be Josh McCown who will get the start and he really struggled against the Buffalo Bills throwing for only 135 yards and two interceptions. Davis Webb served as the backup after he was elevated from the Jets practice Squad.
It has been a trying year for Darnold and there have been a lot of struggles but Bowles has made it clear once Darnold is ready to go again, he will be this teams starting quarterback. Darnold has thrown for 1934 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
In the game he was injured against the Dolphins he threw four interceptions and although an injury is never a good thing, having Darnold sit out a week or two just to regroup probably isn't the worst thing for his development. Coming into the NFL interceptions were a question mark, and it's something that needs to be cleaned up as his career continues.
