Joe Mixon is currently playing as the running back of the Cincinnati Bengals in the National Football League. He has been in the NFL since 2017 after two years of collegiate football with the University of Oklahoma. Mixon has yet to win major awards. Joseph Tyler Mixon was born on July 24, 1996, in Antioch, California. He went to Freedom High School in Oakley, California, where he played basketball and football for the Freedom High Falcons.
For his high school basketball career, Joe Mixon played in 16 games where he averaged 12.2 points per game in 79 made field goals to go along with 57% in the free-throw area. He helped his team finish with a record of 22-2 in the whole season while going undefeated in 10 games in league play that year.
However, Mixon was more well known for his football skills. He was a three-year starter for the Falcons at running back. In his sophomore year, he rushed for 1,134 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on 171 carries. The following year, he had 1,443 rushing yards on 201 carries to go along with 21 touchdowns. He upped his total in his senior year as he rushed for 1,704 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Joe Mixon was a five-star recruit out of high school and he received numerous offers, 47 to be exact. He had offers coming in from Alabama, California, Wisconsin, and UCLA, Ultimately, he chose to play college football for the University of Oklahoma.
Unfortunately, he was suspended from the Oklahoma football team for the entire 2014 season after a misdemeanor assault charge was pressed against him in October of 2014.
The incident happened on July 25, 2014, a day after Mixon turned 18, after surveillance footage showed Mixon and his friends in an altercation with Amelia Molitor and her friend. He then followed Molitor inside the store where they continued arguing and she pushed and slapped Mixon and he retaliated by punching Molitor causing her to fall into a table resulting in four broken bones in her face.
Mixon received a one-year deferred sentence and was tasked to undergo counseling and 100 hours of community service.
In the 2015 season, Mixon suited up for the Oklahoma Sooners football team. In his first career game, he had a 76-yard touchdown reception, the longest catch ever by a freshman running back in Oklahoma Sooners history.
He finished the 2015 season with 753 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns, to go along with 356 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns, in 13 games played.
The following year, performed better than his first season as he finished with 1,274 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns with 538 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. He helped the Sooners defeat Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. To top it all off, he was also included in the 2016 First-team All-Big 12.
After the 2016 season, Joe Mixon decided to forgo his final two years of eligibility and apply for the 2017 NFL Draft.
Coming out of college, Joe Mixon was highly rated and scouts had him as a first-round talent. NFLDraftScout.com ranked him the 5th-best running back, while Sports Illustrated had him at 4th and Pro Football Focus considered him as the third-best running back in the draft. However, he was not invited by the NFL to participate in the draft combine.
In the 2nd round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Joe Mixon was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 48th overall pick in the 2nd round. He was the 4th running back to be selected in that year’s draft. He then signed a four-year $5.45 million contract with $2.81 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $2.1 million.

Joe Mixon played in 14 games in his rookie season and started in 7 of those games. He had totals of 178 attempts for 626 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns to go along with 287 receiving yards in 30 receptions.
The following year, he started in 13 of the 14 games he played for the Bengals. He almost doubled his rushing yards as he finished with 1,168 yards and had 8 touchdowns. He also had 296 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. Mixon led the AFC in rushing yards with his 1,168.
On September 1, 2020, Joe Mixon signed a four-year $48 million contract extension to stay with the Cincinnati Bengals through the 2024 season. His contract has a $10 million signing bonus and $10 million guaranteed upon signing.

He started the 2020 season on a good note as he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Week 4. Unfortunately, he suffered a foot injury two weeks later and was subsequently placed on the injured reserve list. He then finished with a career-low 428 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.
Joe Mixon bounced back hard the following year as he had totals of 1,205 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, and 314 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns — all career highs. To put the cherry on top, he was named to his Pro Bowl, making him the first Bengals running back to make the Pro Bowl since Rudi Johnson in 2004.

He then helped the Bengals to push through the playoffs and qualify for Super Bowl LVI to face the Los Angeles Rams. In the game, he rushed for 72 yards and he also made his first career pass attempt — a 6-yard passing touchdown.
Unfortunately, they lost the contest with a score of 23-20.
According to Spotrac, Joe Mixon has already earned $24,079,453 in his NFL salary alone in just 5 years. By the time his current contract ends, the total will balloon to $53,233,247.
At 25 years old, Joe Mixon has nowhere to go but up. Especially now that he had a taste of what being in the Super Bowl feels like. It is no question that he and the Bengals are going to work twice as hard to get to that level once again.
