Apparently, Josh McCown isn't ready to call it quits in the NFL just yet. The 40-year old quarterback is coming out of retirement to play for the Philadelphia Eagles according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Earlier this summer, McCown announced that he was retiring from football after playing 17 years in the league. Most recently, McCown spent the past two seasons with the New York Jets and was a mentor for Sam Darnold in 2018.

Besides the Jets, the veteran quarterback has spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears.

After hanging up his cleats, McCown struck a deal with ESPN to begin his broadcasting career. Over the summer, McCown spent some time on NFL Live and other ESPN shows.

However, the journeyman quarterback couldn't turn down the opportunity to strap on a helmet again when the Eagles called; putting off his broadcasting career for another year. Philadelphia will become the eighth team that McCown has played for in his NFL career.

For the Eagles, McCown immediately becomes the backup to Carson Wentz with Nate Sudfeld recovering from wrist surgery. Sudfeld injured his wrist in the Eagles' preseason opener and his recovery is expected to be six-plus weeks.

Doug Pederson and the front office knows that they need some insurance behind Wentz. In the past two seasons, Wentz has been unable to finish the season after suffering season-ending injuries.

Despite the injuries, the Eagles signed Wentz to a four-year extension worth $128 million. Bringing in a veteran like McCown will provide some assurance at the backup quarterback position for the Eagles.
