Austin Rivers made history when he became the first NBA player to play for his father, then Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers. Today, the New York Knicks guard will be in the history books for something he did on the court.
Per ESPN Stats & Info, over the last 25 seasons, Rivers is the first Knicks player to go 10-10 or better in a half. He is also the first player in that same time frame to go 10-10 from the field and 5-5 on 3-pointers in a single half.
The Knicks twitter account was in awe, as it should be.
Rivers was lighting up the Utah Jazz and they simply had no answer. His calling card was always scoring and he has erupted for high scoring games, but for him to be able to drop all those points in the first half and to do it perfectly is just mind-numbing. It's amazing displays like these that make you wish arenas could operate at full capacity again. The only blemish is that it came in a losing effort, with the Jazz mounting a furious comeback in the 2nd half.
The former 10th overall pick in the 2012 draft has been putting up decent numbers at the start of the season. Due to injury, he has only played in 12 games. In those games, he averaged 8.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. New York has several guards such as Elfrid Payton, Alec Burks, rookie Immanuel Quickley, Reggie Bullock. Thus, the rotation is not yet set in stone.
The veteran guard has also made stops with the New Orleans Pelicans, Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets.
