New York Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek has some tough decisions to make by the start of the season, namely fortifying his core at the point guard position and naming a starter at the center spot.

While he's been known to use numbers as a way to track performance, the man at the helm claims he will use analytics “a fair amount,” but won't use it as his only means to make his decisions.

“All those numbers, you're out there with five guys. One guy's numbers might not be great. But it might not be (solely his fault),” Hornacek said, according to ESPN's Ian Begley. “Analytics are good to look at and analyze things but sometimes it can throw some confusion in there. I was an accounting major. You make the numbers look the way you want sometimes.”

Jeff Hornacek will hone into particular stats like points per play on pick-and-rolls this season, a point of emphasis in his system. In Phoenix, he said coaches knew that the Suns were second in points per play on pick-and-roll plays when they hit the roller, but only ranked 29th in the frequency with which they hit the roller, a flaw which the coaching staff pointed out to the players.

The Knicks now boast a young core with some veteran pieces. The starting center as well as Kristaps Porzingis could figure a huge part on pick-and-roll plays and, if run correctly, can start developing the right chemistry with the unicorn as the leading scorer of the team.
