The New York Knicks gave their first medical update on star power forward Kristaps Porzingis this season, and the news is good.
Porzingis, who suffered a torn left ACL in February and underwent season-ending surgery shortly after, is making good progress in his recovery and will be re-evaluated in mid-February 2019:
Before he tore his ACL last season, Kristaps Porzingis was averaging 22.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 48 games while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from beyond the arc. There is still no timetable for his return to the court, but this bit of news is a positive one.
The Knicks are in rebuild mode this season. New York enters Friday with a record of 9-24, 12th place in the Eastern Conference. There is absolutely no reason to rush Porzingis back and play him this year if he is not 100 percent, both mentally and physically. Risking the long-term health of the franchise player just to appear in some games and sell tickets during a rebuild season would be irresponsible.
Kristaps Porzingis, 23, will become a restricted free agent after the season ends. The Knicks will have the right to match any offer sheet should the 7-footer sign one with another team.
